- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 medium onion, halved, then sliced thinly
- fresh Parmesan or Pecorino-Romano cheese for garnish
- 1 prepared pie crust dough, enough for crust
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 large, tart baking apples, cored and diced into ¾ inch cubes
